Chinese Cabbage
The green in the foliage has the texture
of lettuce and the broad white centre of the leaf a tender crispness
when sliced in salads.

Requirements to Grow Chinese Cabbage
-
Chinese cabbage needs to be grown quickly
without setback. Therefore maintain an even supply of plant foods and
water as suggested for lettuce. A similar aspect is also required.
-
Planting time for Growing Chinese Cabbage
-
In warmer temperate climates sow in
August and September and then again from early March to late April. In
cool districts during late February to March and again during October
and November; in tropical districts from March to June.

Special Problem
-
Except for slugs and snails, few pests or
diseases attack Chinese cabbage. Some plants almost reach the hearting
stage and then run to seed. In temperate areas this usually occurs
during early spring. In cooler districts it can be at the same period
or later following a sudden cold change. Therefore in these districts
delay sowings until conditions are settled, or sow to mature during the
cooler months.
