  • Chives can be grown indoors in a sunny window-sill but do better in an open sunny part of the garden or in pots 15-20 cm in diameter.

  • Can be grown from seeds sown in spring or autumn or by division of whole clumps at that time. Trim back the foliage to at least half before replanting.

  • Enrich the soil with a dressing of poultry manure or complete plant food. Set tubers 30-40 cm apart about 10 cm deep. Keep reasonably moist once growth commences. Mulch with compost. Removing flower buds improves tuber quality. Tubers are dug from 4-5 months after planting until mid-winter.
