Leek
Boiled leeks have a flavor somewhere
between onions and asparagus. They suit cool and tropical areas where
onions are difficult to grow.
-
Requirement in Growing Leek
-
Sow in a sunny position, preferably in
deeply dug soil with plenty of well-rotted compost. If the soil is acid
add lime or dolomite and a dressing of fowl manure, or one-third cup
per sq. m of complete plant food.
-
Planting time for Growing Leek
-
In both cool and temperate areas leeks
are best grown through the warm weather, from August-March. In tropical
districts they are sown from late summer to autumn.
-
Cultivation for Leek
-
Sow seeds thinly in seed boxes or seed
beds. Prepare garden soil and allow to settle. Make furrows about 50 cm
apart and 12 cm deep and plant seedlings along the furrows about 10 cm
apart, and as growth progresses, fill soil around the plants almost to
the base of the leaves. Water occasionally with complete water-soluble
plant food. Leeks mature 24-28 weeks from the time seed is sown. They
crop over a period of about 12 weeks.
