Cultivation for Parsnip
-
Parsnip seeds need good contact with soil
moisture to germinate. The best procedure is to allow the soil to
settle for a week or two after preparing. Have the surface only just
lightly crumbly, then after lightly sowing the seed along the rows and
covering with a few mm of soil, use a flat board to press down into
good contact with the soil. After germination thin out and cultivate as
suggested for carrots.
-
If you are interested in growing giant
show-bench parsnips, use a crowbar to widen a cone-shaped hole 75 cm
deep, fill with a mixture of equal parts of light soil and well-rotted
compost, firm down, sow 2-3 seeds close to the centre then as growth
becomes evident remove all but the strongest shoot.
