Rhubarb
Rhubarb clumps can remain productive for
many years so it is better to keep them in separate beds.

Planting time for Growing Organic Rhubarb
-
Most rhubarb is grown from crowns planted
during the winter months. It can also be raised from seed sown in
spring.
-
Cultivation for Organic Rhubarb
-
Mulch the soil liberally with well-rotted
compost or manure prior to planting out, and maintain a good surface
mulch of these materials around the plant. Keep well watered and do not
over-pick. Remove outer leaves only with an outward and downward twist;
leave at least 4 new mature leaves in the centre of each crown. Remove
any seed heads. If vigor is lacking, water about once a fortnight with
a complete water-soluble plant food.
-
Space seedlings 15-20 cm apart as soon as
they are large enough. As they develop keep only those that show good
red sturdy stems and discard the rest. Transplant into their permanent
position during winter. Propagate from good clumps by dividing the
crowns during winter. Good color and size depend on selection rather
than special feeding.

Special problems in Organic Rhubarb
