These are often confused with the much stronger-flavored Swedes. They are sweet and succulent, especially if grown quickly and used while young. Try harvesting them 8-10 weeks from sowing and using as an hors d'oeuvre as popular in Europe, or slicing thinly for salads.

  • Table turnips grow best through the cooler months. In temperate districts sow in February and March and again in August and September. In tropical districts sow during autumn and early winter.

  • As with cabbages they are subject to grey aphids, cabbage moth or white butterfly caterpillar and slugs or snails. These problems can be controlled by using cabbage dust and, if necessary, snail bait.
