Root vegetables e.g. carrots and parsnips, do not transplant well and should be sown where they are to grow. Beetroot and onions transplant well. Peas and beans do not enjoy transplanting —sow direct. Lettuce, cabbage and cauliflower are amenable, but lettuces are less likely to run to seed during summer if spared the shock of transplanting.
