Thinning Out Vegetable Seedlings

When sowing direct, it pays to thin out at the earliest possible stage, preferably as soon as the seedlings begin to make their second or true leaves. Spaces needed between the seedlings are given in the accompanying vegetable growing guide which shows minimum spacing where a restricted area makes crowding desirable. (Conventional spacing is given on the seed packets).

I find the easiest way to thin crowded seedlings is to use a thin stick or pencil to hold aside the plants you want to keep so that you can more easily remove the unwanted ones.
