Slug Trap
-
The best slug-trap is a soup plate, dog
drinking-trough or anything of china, wide and shallow, sunk level with
the ground and filled with a mixture of equal parts of beer and water
sweetened with a dessertspoonful of Barbados sugar to the pint. This
can be cleared of dead slugs with one quick swish of a broom and the
trap refilled from a can of the mixture, for one trap makes little
impression - you need a dozen.
-
Your local will provide a bucketful of
beer from the contents of the drip-tray for nothing, and this is quite
good enough for slugs. The object of using beer instead of the milk
often recommended is to stop cats from drinking the mixture, and though
hedgehogs may take it, modern beer diluted to half strength is not
enough to intoxicate them.
-
The sugar attracts to the traps codling,
tortrix and yellow underwing moths, which are responsible for the
cutworm or surface caterpillars. The dead slugs are not poisonous to
birds or anything else that may eat them.
